This post could have been entitled ‘Forcing whisky on your mates!’ but thankfully we agreed on something more low key. We were talking about how to introduce people to whisky (those who are of the legal age to drink of course). What is the best dram to help a new whisky drinker get a feel for it, and indeed should you start with something subtle or just jump in at the deep end?
This whole debate started when we were talking about the whole ice, water or as it is question which we talked about in the post How to drink whisky. Another argument that will never be settled (and I still say that it doesn’t mater). We even got into which type of glass would be best to serve the whisky in to appeal to the eyes of the victim…err….I mean new whisky drinker.
But all these questions are maybe just too much and could even be the best way to scare someone away from what can sometimes been seen as an aloof drink coveted by stuffy old scrotes. No offense intended to the old scrotes of course (my wife tells me I am one). Sometimes though it might just be best to point the new whisky drinker to a list of your favourite drinks from different regions or price brackets and give them a list of good blogs (click for out list of whisky blogs) so that they can get a good set of opinions.

The Black Grouse is a wonderful blend based on peated Islay malts. The result is a quality blend that tastes like a much more expensive Whisky.
It has a deep smokiness and is very smooth. While it might not be quite on par with an Islay single malt it is not far off, and at the price makes a great case for itself as a Whisky to keep between your blends and single malts.

Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength – Our Review
Here we have the IWSC Silver Award winner. It is a delightful single malt with a wonderfully deep golden colour, the kind of Whisky that is a real pleasure to pour.
Starting with a light fruit, it develops on the tongue to form an oaked spiciness. It can’t help but be warming at a full 60% abv. One to be treated with respect.
If you are looking for something special that won’t break the bank, then you can’t go far wrong with this.
