Duncan Taylor Rum Collection Review

Duncan-Taylor-Trinidad-Rum

I freely admit that my experience of Rum has been mostly from the budget end of the quality scale.  This had probably given me an unfair opinion of it, just a a budget whisky might to a first time whisky taster.  However, I was privileged to sample the latest selection from the Duncan Taylor Rum Collection this week, and boy have I changed my mind!

I decided to start with the Martinique 10 year old single cask.  At 54.5% I decided to add a good splash of water to release the flavour.  Wow, an ultra smooth delivery and lingering warmness was followed by a delicious but very subtle fresh liquorish aftertaste, a complete contrast to the initial sweetness that greeted the tongue.

Next up was the 1991 Trinidad 54.8%.  This was probably my favourite one of bunch.  A subtle flavour full of honey fills the mouth without too much sweetness.  As a whisky drinker, I found this was the easiest Rum sample to feel at home with.

I then moved onto the Guyana 23 year old 54.9%, which was again subtle and not too sweet.  It had a mouth full of pear drops to follow the initial smoothness.  Quite refreshing in a funny sort of way.  Another Rum which I would be glad to try again.

Last but not least was the Jamaica 12 year old Rum 53.1%.  This one was the most complex of the bunch.  After a medicinal aroma (think Talisker) Initial honey and herb flavours were followed by a deep hot lemon and honey drink after taste.  In fact it was amazing how the flavour developed over time.  If you are into the stronger flavours then this one would be of interest.

As I said Rum has never gripped me like Whisky has, but I think that may has changed forever.  It is just a case of searching out quality, which shouldn’t suprise me as the same is true for Whisky.

If you get the chance then be sure to give these a try.  You won’t be disappointed.  They will be finding a way onto my shelf I am sure!

White Horse Whisky

white horse blended whisky

If you are looking for something great but are on a budget then you can’t go far wrong with this blended white horse whisky.

White Horse has been around for a very long time, and with good reason. With an even taste it stands up well to its higher priced competition.

With a honey and peat finish it is a very pleasing whisky for the price

Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength

glenfarclas 105 single malt whisky

Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength – Our Review

Here we have the IWSC Silver Award winner. It is a delightful single malt with a wonderfully deep golden colour, the kind of Whisky that is a real pleasure to pour.

Starting with a light fruit, it develops on the tongue to form an oaked spiciness. It can’t help but be warming at a full 60% abv. One to be treated with respect.

If you are looking for something special that won’t break the bank, then you can’t go far wrong with this.
